Toronto, Ontario – May 20, 2021: Ghella announced today that West End Connectors has reached financial close on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) Advance Tunnel project in Toronto.
West End Connectors, selected by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx to design, build and finance the project, is a consortium comprised of Ghella (20%), Aecon Group Inc. (40%) and Dragados Canada Inc. (40%).
The scope of work includes the design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, 6.3-kilometre long twin tunnels, installation of precast concrete tunnel liner, nine cross-passages, headwalls for four future subway stations as well as an extensive program for relocating and protecting existing utilities. Construction is expected to commence in mid-2021, with expected completion in the second quarter of 2025.
The ECWE is the first phase of work for the 9.2-kilometre extension of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit. The extension will run primarily underground and westward from the future Mount Dennis Station at Weston Road, to Renforth Drive. The system will connect to the GO Kitchener Line and Union-Pearson (UP) Express at Mount Dennis Station, TTC bus services in Toronto, as well as GO and MiWay bus services.
“We are looking forward to commencing the works and to a mutually beneficial relationship with our Client and our Partners,” says Lech Garwacki Area Manager of Ghella. “This fast-track tunnel project combines familiar underground and urban challenges common to many previous Ghella projects. We are very pleased getting to know Toronto and to contribute in a relevant way to the extension of its transit system, and particularly doing so by providing a better sustainable transportation option.”
Further information about the project is available on the Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx websites.
