We’ve achieved yet another significant milestone in the construction of Watercare Services Limited’s Central Interceptor, installing the 10,000th tunnel ring. This marks a major step forward in the ambitious wastewater infrastructure project, which is set to transform Auckland’s wastewater system.
In addition to this achievement, the project has set a new record in Ghella’s 130-year history — the longest tunnel drive ever completed using a single tunnel boring machine. This remarkable feat is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our team.
After four years of tunnelling, the 16.2-kilometre Central Interceptor tunnel is now complete. Once operational, it will play a crucial role in protecting Auckland’s waterways and beaches, significantly improving the city’s wastewater management for future generations.
With more than 10,000 tunnel segments installed, quality assurance remains a top priority. Each segment undergoes at least 18 rigorous quality checks to ensure durability and safety, reinforcing the project’s commitment to building an infrastructure designed to last over a century.
Beyond its engineering accomplishments, the project represents a long-term investment in Auckland’s future. As a cornerstone of sustainable infrastructure, the Central Interceptor will enhance environmental quality and strengthen the city’s wastewater resilience for generations to come.
As the project nears completion, the focus remains on delivering a high-quality, enduring solution that will benefit communities for years to come.
